Aaron Sorkin was on “Fresh Air” Monday afternoon, and he told Terry Gross that he “like[s] writing about heroes [who] don’t wear capes or disguises. You feel like, ‘Gee, this looks like the real world and feels like the real world — why can’t that be the real world?’” Yes, a fantasy land where male privilege goes unchallenged, forever, and bosses can spend meetings riffing on the attractiveness of their dates’ legs (as MacAvoy did in “Fix”), where the male gaze is the only gaze, where men have ideas and women are interrupting. Comme si tout cela ne suffisait pas, Sorkin semble avoir quelque peu manqué l’âge du Web et de Twitter. There are plenty of terrific actors on this show, but they can’t do much with roles that amount to familiar Sorkinian archetypes. There is the Great Man, who is theoretically flawed, but really a primal truth-teller whom everyone should follow (or date). Mais The Newsroom n’est pas qu’un fantasme d’impuissant, c’est surtout un fantasme d’impuissance. Il ne vous aura pas échappé qu’en 2012 essayer d’imaginer comment faire une bonne émission d’info télé, c’est un peu comme vouloir réinventer le Morse après l’invention du téléphone. C’est anachronique, mais ça arrange bien Sorkin, qui nous a montré avec le technophobe The Social Network qu’il est dépassé par les intertubes. A l’stère de la télévision toute puissante, c’était facile de se voir comme victime des médias, artiste maudit qui mène une lutte perdue d’avance contre un système pourri mais invincible. Aujour d’hui, manque de bol, nous ne sommes plus des impuissants, nous sommes complices.

Aaron Sorkin is why people hate liberals. He’s a smug, condescending know-it-all who isn’t as smart as he thinks he is. His feints toward open-mindedness are transparently phony, he mistakes his opinion for common sense, and he’s preachy. Sorkin has spent years fueling the delusional self-regard of well-educated liberals. He might be more responsible than anyone else for the anti-democratic everyone would agree with us if they weren’t all so stupid attitude of the contemporary progressive movement. And age is not improving him.
